TriMet light rail construction will close Interstate 84 in both directions at the Interstate 205 interchange beginning late Friday and lasting into early Monday.
The two-mile stretch of freeway is expected to close at 10 p.m. Friday and reopen by 4 a.m. Monday.
Westbound motorists will have to take Exit 9 to I-205 and can use southbound I-205 as an alternate route. The eastbound lanes will close at Exit 6.
The closure is expected to cause congestion on Interstate 205, and travelers may want to avoid the area where possible.
The closure will allow construction crews to work on a new light-rail bridge over the freeway. It’s part of TriMet’s “Better Red” construction project, which aims to increase the speed and frequency of trains between Gateway Transit Center and Portland International Airport, as well as extend service further west in Washington County.
The work will not disrupt transit service through the area. However, a separate project will interrupt the MAX Blue Line from Gateway Transit Center to East 122nd Avenue on Saturday and Sunday. Shuttle buses will run between those stations.
